Having a handyman around the house is really nice, but sometimes he’s not available or there is nobody. After searching the Internet and several issues of Handy Magazines (the handyman club of America magazine), a list of helpful tips have been compiled.

  • To keep organized, keep circular saw blades in cookie tins - after all the cookies have been eaten, of course.
  • When the rungs on a chair have become loose, wrap a layer of sandpaper around the ends of the rungs and apply glue before putting it back in its designated hole.
  • When painting, use a 1-inch diameter x 28 inches long dowel by putting it in the holes of the ladder legs and then hang the can of paint off the part that sticks out.
  • Tarp weights: take four butter tubs or large plastic cups and fill them with cement or plaster. Stick a stiff wire in the center and allow to dry completely. To weight down a tarp, hook the wire in the hole on the corner of the tarp and it’s done.
  • To move earth, bricks or gravel, a child’s wagon or sled can be used in a pinch. Just clean it out before the kids want it again.
  • To organize computer cords, extension cords and hoses, make little bungee cords out of a washer and a large rubber band. String the rubber band through the washer, then string one end of the rubber band through the other end and pull it tight. A good keyboard for your computer can custom made from a keypad manufacturer. To use it, wrap it around the item being held together and hook the rubber band end around the washer.

Make Your Own Bungee Cords

  • Next time the replacement of a bunch of small parts are needed, set them on a scanner and scan it, effectively taking a photo of it. Print it out and take it to the hardware store to get exactly what is needed.
  • Tired of the trash bag always slipping down inside the trash bin? Here’s a handy tip: get one with a fitting lid and cut out the center of the lid. Put the bag in the receptacle and then put the ring that’s left of the lid on the receptacle. The bag will stay in place perfectly.
  • Take a flannel sheet and fold it in half lengthwise and sew one end together. Put it in a sleeping bag for an added layer of warmth.
  • Sharpen razor blades by rubbing the sharp edge along the striker of a matchbook.
  • Place small nails between the tooth of a comb to hold them in place while hammering them, saving your fingers.
  • Dampen the paper backing on sand paper before attaching it to the block and it’ll last longer and work better.
  • Make drawers slide easier by rubbing candle wax or soap on the runners on the sides of the drawers.

Easily Make Screws Fit Tighter

  • Remember, lefty loosely and righty tight.
  • Apply soap or wax on screws to make them easier to screw in.
  • When a screw no longer sits tight in its hole, remove it and put a wood match or toothpick in the hole and break it off, and then put the screw back. It will fit tight again.
  • To stop a dampness problem in closed spaces, like closets, simply put some charcoal briquettes in an empty coffee can and cut small holes in the lid. Use two or three of them for a larger space.
  • Cut off the leg of an old pantyhose and fill the foot with cedar chips. Tie it off at the top and hang it in a close for a sweet cedar smell. It doubles as moth repellant.
  • When the tiny back to an earring or the screw from the hinge on sunglasses is dropped on carpet, there’s an easy way to find it. Simply run the flat part of a coat hanger over the rug, making all the tiny floor things pop up in plain view.
  • Drill a hole through a large cork and fasten it to a keychain. If the keys are dropped in water they’ll float, making them easier to retrieve.
  • While fishing or camping, use an ink pen that’s been removed of it’s ink and roll up a driver’s license or fishing license to store in it. Then use the clip to keep it someplace safe.

Be creative and it might be surprising what can be accomplished by thinking out of the box!
